FAQs

What geographical area do you cover?
Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.

What services do you provide?
The Susquehanna Conservation District provides education and technical support regarding soil and water conservation. See  our program page for in-depth information on each program.

What enforcement authority do you have?
The Susquehanna Conservation District encourages voluntary compliance with state and federal regulations through education, site review and technical assistance.  While the district does not have the authority to enforce laws , our agency partners,  the PA Department of Environmental Protection and the PA Fish and Boat Commission,  do enforce state and federal laws.

When should I contact you?
Call the district with your questions and concerns regarding soil and water quality issues.  The bulk of our calls relate to erosion and sediment entering local waterways.

What fees do you charge for assistance?
The District fees for E&S plan reviews are listed at E&S Review Fee Schedule .  There is also a fee for the NPDES permit application.

If I see a problem, how do I know to contact you, the Fish & Boat Commission, the police, the DEP, the Bureau of Mines, etc.?The district responds to soil and water concerns.  Concerns about Non-Coal mining (quarry)  operations should be addressed to the Bureau of Mines.  If you are unsure about which agency to contact, start with us!  If necessary, we'll refer your call to the appropriate agency.

If I believe that I have a problem and I come to you for help, am I liable to get fined? The district encourages compliance with local, state and federal law.  We do not impose fines.  While each situation is different,  those who are taking steps to mediate a problem to comply with the law are given an opportunity to correct the problem prior to PA DEP or the PA Fish and Boat Commission issuing fines.

Are you a source of funds? For what kinds of things? The district can provide a letter of support to non-profit organizations seeking grants from other organizations.  Eligible municipalities are encouraged to apply for funds through the Dirt and Gravel Road Program to correct erosion problems on dirt and gravel roads that affect water quality in local streams.  For a list of grant funding opportunities associated with conservation efforts please refer to our Grants link.
